Eventhough I was really desperate that was a lot of money for me. I called Geek Squad and they quoted based on level of damage but of course my hard drive fell into the most expensive bracket which was $1600+ for data recovery. they all told me if it was a mechanical problem and they needed to open up the laptop in a clean room it would be over $1000. I was told the evaluation would take a week and then I would be contacted about how much the price would be after which it would tak an additional 3-4 weeks to recover the files. We knew we had to get professional help for the problem so I called various data recovery places who all wanted me to ship the hard drive to them and pay a fee just to look at it. We turned our computer off for awhile to see if that would work but when the hard drive was recognized, all of the files were corrupted and would not open. When we looked online at numerous blogs and even youtube for help in recovering our data and fixing this problem but in the end everything that was recommended did not help our situation. We tried plugging it in to the other computers and laptops in our home with no results. I felt terrible because a week prior I had dropped the hard drive but it still worked fine so I didn't think anything of it and now it was giving me problems. I was panicked because EVERYTHING was on that hard drive including valuable pictures and home movies of my kids, my husband's thesis, and a lot more.
